I’m Kurt Belding. I grew up hunting, drifted away from it in my twenties, and fell back in hard when I moved to Colorado and started chasing elk.
I’d been in business my whole life — sports nutrition, retail, fitness. Then I turned 40, and I had what most people would call a midlife crisis. I quit all of it. Shut down the businesses, sold what I could, and walked away from everything I was doing — for one reason. I wanted to spend my life going on epic hunting adventures.
It was a huge gamble, and for a while it looked like it wasn’t going to work. But I kept hunting. Camp after camp, outfitter after outfitter, country after country — until I realized I’d been on so many hunts and met so many outfitters that I could tell you exactly which ones were the real deal, and which ones were just a good website.
That’s Western Obsessions. I’m living the dream I bet everything on, and my job now is getting other hunters on theirs. Tell me the hunt you’ve been thinking about your whole life, and I’ll send you exactly where you need to go — to an outfitter I’ve hunted myself, or one somebody I trust has vouched for. I do the legwork so you’re not gambling on a stranger.
I’ll never recommend a hunt I don’t believe in, and I’ll never make one sound better than it is just to make a sale. You can trust me with the hunt of your life because I bet my whole life on the same dream.

How an Outfitter Earns a Spot
Most hunters who call us have been burned before — a hunt that looked nothing like the website, a guide who treated them like a second-rate customer. Here is what has to be true before a hunt goes on our list.
We’ve Hunted Them
Kurt has hunted the outfitter himself, or a member of the team he trusts has. Nobody gets on this list off a phone call and a brochure.
Filmed on the Show
Many of our outfitters have been filmed for Western Obsessions TV. You can watch them run a real hunt, in real weather, before you ever send a deposit.
Working Guides
Our consultants are guides and outfitters, not salespeople. Some have 25-plus years guiding. Some have run their own outfitting businesses. They know what a good camp looks like because they have worked in one.
The Family Rule
If we would not send a family member on that hunt, we will not send you. That is the whole filter, and it is why our list is shorter than it could be.
And When It Doesn’t Go Well, We Say So
Hunting is hunting. Plenty of good hunts end with an unpunched tag, and pretending otherwise is how hunters get sold a fantasy. Kurt publishes his own failures on this site — including the Alaska moose tag he ate because he skipped the research he tells everybody else to do.
