Colorado just fired the starting gun on the 2026 big game season — applications opened March 1, and the deadline is 8 p.m. on April 7. If you’re planning to hunt Colorado this fall, here’s what changed and what you need to know before you apply.
Key Changes for 2026
Gunnison Basin Goes Limited Draw
GMUs 54, 55, and 551 have moved from over-the-counter to limited draw. If you’ve been hunting these units on OTC tags, those days are over. You’ll now need to apply and hope your number comes up.
New Tags and Opportunities
- New moose tags have been added to the draw
- Additional archery elk units are now available
- Bear licenses have been expanded
Youth Priority
Youth hunters get 100% preference in the secondary draw, which opens June 18. If you’ve got kids who want to hunt, this is a huge opportunity.
Mandatory CWD Testing
Elk harvested in specific GMUs will require mandatory Chronic Wasting Disease testing. Check the regulations to see if your unit is affected.
GMU Boundary Modifications
GMUs 97 and 99 have had boundary modifications. If you’ve hunted these units before, make sure you review the updated maps before heading out.
Before You Apply
You need a qualifying license before you can submit your application. Don’t wait until the last minute — the deadline is firm at 8 p.m. on April 7, and the system doesn’t care if you forgot.
Get your application in early, double-check your unit selections, and make sure you understand the new rules. Colorado keeps changing the game, and the hunters who stay informed are the ones who fill tags.
