There is something about watching a few thousand caribou move across the ancient hills of the Arctic tundra that awakens a sense of awe in every person who has ever witnessed it. Like ants moving and mingling, velvet antlers weaving and dancing amongst the mass of living creatures — it’s impossible to not be impressed by one of nature’s greatest phenomena: the caribou migration.
This world-class 1-on-1 guided hunt takes place on Beechey Lake in Nunavut Territory, 280 miles northeast of Yellowknife, far above the tree line, in the heart of the Beverly caribou herd range. Camp sits on the Back River system where hunters have enjoyed nearly 100% success rates with both archery and rifle for years running. Hunters from this outfitter have taken the SCI world record caribou (scoring almost 500 inches), the Pope and Young #3 all-time, and numerous other record-book bulls.
The Hunt
You’ll fly from Yellowknife via charter plane (100-minute flight) to camp, arriving early to mid-afternoon. Camp consists of weather-tested Arctic Oven tents with generator power and heat in all tents — surprisingly comfortable for how remote you are. Transportation around the hunting area is by aluminum boats on the 30-mile-long lake, covering a large amount of country.
Each hunting day gives you 10-11 hours in the field. Breakfast at 7:00 AM, pack your lunch, and guides aim to return by 6:00 PM for dinner. Most rifle shots are under 300 yards. Archery hunters should practice in windy conditions — most shots on caribou are 50+ yards given the open terrain.
Terrain & Conditions
The terrain is generally dry and rocky above the tree line. No hip waders needed, but sturdy waterproof hunting boots are a must. Temperatures range from 32-75°F in late August down to 25-40°F by mid-September. Wolf, wolverine, and ptarmigan tags are encouraged. Outstanding fishing for Lake Trout and Grayling is also available.
