In 2024, the Nunavut government granted Adventure Northwest the first moose tags ever issued to non-residents of Nunavut for the Bathurst Inlet region. The moose population along the Arctic coast has been steadily increasing over the last 20 years, and with a huntable population now established, the inaugural test hunt in September 2024 was wildly successful — two moose and a bonus caribou were taken.
This is the northernmost moose hunt in North America. You’ll hunt along the Arctic Ocean coast at Bathurst Inlet (Qingaun), 350 miles north of Yellowknife, well above the tree line. Glassing from high vantage points is extremely effective in this open terrain — up to 30 moose have been spotted in a single day. Hunting is done along the coastline by Kingfisher and Lund boats with dependable 4-stroke engines, covering an incredible amount of shoreline and willow-patch bays.
About the Area
Bathurst Inlet has been an important gathering place for Inuit families for thousands of years. The legendary local guide Sam Kapolak — one of the early members of the Bathurst Inlet community — leads these hunts. There is something special about hunting with someone who knows the area better than literally anyone else on earth.
The Moose
These moose are classified as Canadian moose by Boone and Crockett and SCI, even though they live on the Arctic Ocean. Antler size runs in the early 50-inch range for a big bull, averaging closer to 40 inches. Caribou are generally present in this region as well, and grizzly bear tags are sometimes available.
