Buena Vista Colorado Mule Deer Hunts

Buena Vista Colorado Mule Deer Hunts

The Sawatch Range grows the kind of mule deer most hunters spend a lifetime chasing — heavy, deep-forked bucks living between the Arkansas River Valley and the highest skyline in the Rockies. These are fully guided 5-day mule deer hunts based out of Buena Vista, Colorado, in the heart of the Collegiate Peaks, with typical bucks running 135″ to 190″ class and success rates above 90% in recent seasons.

You can hunt it two ways: a private land hunt in the ranch and foothill country around Buena Vista, or a remote above-timberline hunt in the alpine — a genuine bucket-list tag for hunters who have been stacking preference points. Both hunts are 2×1 guided, both run 5 full days, and both are built around the same thing: putting you on a mature buck. If you’re comparing areas across the West, start with our guided mule deer hunts page to see how this one stacks up.

The Hunt

This is classic western spot-and-stalk. You’re up two hours before sunrise for a light breakfast and coffee, then out to glass as the light comes up, picking apart the country until you find the buck you’re after. Midday, when the deer bed, you rest and eat — then you’re back on the glass in the evening as bucks feed out of the timber and into the open.

Hunts run during September archery, September muzzleloader, and Colorado’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rifle seasons. September in the high country means velvet bucks above the trees; the late rifle seasons put you on deer as they shift down toward winter range. Your consultant will help you pick the season and weapon that fit how you want to hunt.

Two Ways to Hunt It

Private land near Buena Vista. Deeded ranch and foothill country in GMUs 561, 56, 481, and 48 — lower-elevation ground where you’re glassing sage draws, oak brush, and hay-field edges for bucks that live most of their lives on private dirt. All meals, lodging, and transportation during the hunt are included, and these units are far easier to draw than the high country.

Above timberline in the alpine. The signature hunt — a remote camp set above the trees in GMUs 82 and 48, hunting velvet bucks in the alpine basins during the September seasons. This is one of Colorado’s true limited-draw trophy tags: it currently takes roughly 15 preference points to draw, and no landowner vouchers exist for it. If you’ve been building points for years, this is the hunt those points were for — a tag most hunters get to hold once every couple of decades. Camp, all meals, and transportation during the hunt are included.

Trophy Quality

Typical bucks on these hunts run 135″ to 190″ class, and success has run better than 90% on deer hunts in recent seasons. That’s the product of good country, low pressure, and guides who live in these units year-round — they’re watching bucks all summer, and when you show up they already know where the deer are living.

Getting Your Tag

All Colorado deer tags are limited draw — there are no over-the-counter deer tags — but the two hunts sit at opposite ends of the draw. The private-land units are far easier to pull, while the timberline tag takes serious points. Our team walks you through the Colorado draw and tells you exactly what to apply for based on the points you have. If you want to understand how the system works first, read our Colorado draw strategy guide — then call us and we’ll map out your application together.

What to Bring

Weather in the Sawatch can swing from summer to winter in an afternoon, so pack for all of it: a range finder, good optics, waterproof boots, rain gear, a headlamp, a day pack, and layered clothing you can add and shed through the day. For the high-country camp, bring a warm sleeping bag. Your consultant will send a full gear list for your specific hunt and season.
