Kamchatka Moose Hunting in Russia

Kamchatka Moose Hunting in Russia

The world’s largest moose roam wild and free on the pristine Kamchatka Peninsula of the Russian Far East. These giants regularly exceed the Alaska-Yukon subspecies in body size, carrying wide, well-palmated antlers that attract trophy hunters from around the globe. This is your chance to hunt in the actual concession where the current world record was taken.

Kamchatka typically gets several feet of snow each year, and the experienced Itelmen guiding teams rely on well-equipped snow machines to navigate the vast hunting areas in search of fresh tracks and to glass and spot moose. Hunters are towed in a sled, similar to the way Barren Ground Muskox and Polar Bear hunts are conducted in the Canadian Arctic. The general hunting method is spot and stalk, but the amount of snow will dictate how much walking is possible. In years of heavy snow, sinking up to the thigh or waist when dismounting the sled can make walking impossible. The combo of machine and sled is often the only way to penetrate the hunting area, locate, and get into position on your trophy.

The Itelmen guides are absolute experts at driving snow machines, much like the Kyrgyz and Mongolians are masters over their horses. They truly understand trophy hunting — trophy quality is a matter of pride to them. They are vested in the principles of selective hunting for the wide, well-palmated antlers that make Kamchatka moose the most sought-after in the world. They know why you chose to hunt here.

Shots typically vary from 50 to 200 yards. Although these bulls are massive, they will fall from standard or magnum calibers that you shoot confidently. A premium bullet placed in the heart-lung region will put your big trophy down.

Moose camps consist of permanent purpose-built heated cabins. Hunters share a cabin big enough for comfort and personal hunting gear. A dedicated camp cook prepares wholesome meals — the food is plentiful and nutritious. The hunting area is remote and accessible only by helicopter charter, which is included in the hunt price.

Guides will expertly skin, re-flesh, and salt the hide of your moose to perfection while in camp. Trophies typically ship to your designated port of entry within 6-7 months after the hunt. The most reputable taxidermy firm in the Russian Federation handles all trophy preparation, using chemicals no longer available to North American taxidermists for expert tanning. Your trophy will be ready for mounting upon delivery to your taxidermist — bypassing North American tanneries saves you both money and time. Full export documentation and coordination with shippers, wildlife brokers, and your taxidermist are handled for you.
