The Markhor is the ultimate mountain hunting trophy — Pakistan’s national animal and one of the most coveted species on earth. With its iconic spiraling horns and rugged mountain habitat, the Markhor has earned its reputation as the pinnacle of Asian mountain hunting. Only a handful of tags are issued each year under Pakistan’s world-renowned conservation program, making this one of the most exclusive hunting opportunities available anywhere.
Pakistan is home to three huntable Markhor subspecies — Astor, Kashmir, and Suleiman — each found in distinct mountain ranges across the country’s northern and western territories. Whether you are pursuing the corkscrew-horned Kashmir Markhor in the Hindu Kush or the flare-horned Astor Markhor in Gilgit-Baltistan, every Markhor hunt is a true expedition into some of the most dramatic mountain terrain on the planet.
Hunt Area
Markhor hunting takes place in Pakistan’s most remote and spectacular mountain regions. The Astor Markhor is found in the valleys and tributaries of Gilgit-Baltistan, while the Kashmir Markhor inhabits the Hindu Kush slopes of Chitral, Dir, and Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Suleiman Markhor is found in the Torghar Hills of Balochistan. Hunting elevations range from 4,000 to 13,000 feet depending on subspecies and season, with terrain defined by sheer cliffs, narrow gorges, loose scree, and dramatic rock formations. These are some of the most visually stunning and physically challenging hunting grounds in the world.
The Hunt
Markhor hunting is a spot-and-stalk affair across steep, technical mountain terrain. Hunters use high-quality optics to glass vast areas from opposing slopes during the early morning and late afternoon when Markhor are most active. Stalking a mature billy can take days of patient glassing, careful positioning, and precise shot placement. Shots are typically taken between 300–450 yards from challenging angles. Hunters should be in excellent physical condition and prepared for high-altitude hiking — this is rightfully called the Everest of hunting. The prime hunting months are December and January during the rut, when mature males are most visible and active at lower elevations.
Conservation
Pakistan’s Markhor conservation program is one of the greatest wildlife success stories in the world. The community-based tag system directs 80% of permit fees to local Village Conservation Funds, giving communities a direct financial incentive to protect Markhor habitat and populations. This approach has grown the Markhor population from the brink of extinction to over 5,000 animals, leading the IUCN to reclassify the species from Endangered to Near Threatened. When you hunt Markhor in Pakistan, you are directly funding the conservation of the species and the livelihoods of the communities that protect them.
