The Mid-Asian ibex is one of the most impressive mountain game animals in the world, with massive sweeping horns that can exceed 50 inches. Found in the same rugged mountain terrain as the Marco Polo sheep, these billies offer a distinctly different hunting experience — more technical, more vertical, and always a challenge. The ibex populations in this concession are very strong, making this a perfect standalone hunt or an ideal addition after a successful sheep hunt.
Hunting takes place across a 208,000-hectare concession in the legendary Wakhan Corridor of Tajikistan, where ibex inhabit the rocky ridgelines and steep cliff faces that define this dramatic landscape. Expect spot-and-stalk hunting at its finest, glassing bands of billies from the lodge or ridgetop vantage points before planning your approach. Hunt difficulty ranges from moderate to challenging depending on where the animals are feeding and the season’s snowfall conditions.
Hunt Area
The Wakhan Corridor is the historic trading route where Marco Polo first documented sightings of the sheep that now bears his name. This same breathtaking mountainous region is home to thriving ibex populations that move along the local ridgelines, feeding on rocky slopes and grass-filled pockets throughout the concession. The terrain is classic high-altitude mountain hunting — steep, rugged, and visually stunning. Ibex share the range with Marco Polo sheep, and combo hunts are available for those looking to pursue both species on a single trip.
The Lodge
Completed in late 2021, the private Vakhan River Lodge was built with the discerning hunter in mind. It comfortably sleeps 8 guests, but only 2 hunters are scheduled at a time unless otherwise requested. The lodge is not shared with other outfitters. Amenities include heated floors, individual bedrooms, three full western bathrooms, a fireplace, modern bedding, a hot water shower, a sauna, and a full kitchen with a dedicated chef. This is uncommon comfort for mountain hunting in Central Asia.
