Often considered the pinnacle of any hunting career, the polar bear hunt is as cultural as it is wild. This outfitter has been offering highly successful polar bear hunts for nearly 30 years from Pond Inlet, Nunavut — hunting between the Baffin Bay and Lancaster Sound bear populations, both of which are increasing.
Polar bears are a true conservation success story. Over 16,000 polar bears now live in Canada — approximately half of the entire world’s polar bear population. The area hunted sits between two healthy, growing populations with a combined annual sustainable harvest of 216 bears per year.
Inuit Culture & the Hunt
Polar bears are greatly respected by Inuit hunters as the most intelligent animal in the Arctic and a symbol of resilience, patience, and determination. Polar bear hunting is taken very seriously — considered both exciting and dangerous, it is the pinnacle challenge of life in the Arctic. The hunt preserves the Inuit connection to the land and their cultural identity.
Revenue from guided hunts is divided among the Inuit guide, dog team owner, hide cleaner, and outfitter. A bear killed during a guided hunt is removed from the quota and the meat is distributed within the community. This income is often reinvested into hunting equipment and supplies that enable Inuit families to continue their subsistence hunting.
