Free-range axis deer hunting in the Texas Hill Country is one of the best-kept secrets in North American hunting. Based out of the Sonora, Roosevelt, and Sterling City country, this 3-day fully guided hunt puts you on wild, free-ranging axis bucks in classic Hill Country terrain — rolling limestone hills, juniper-choked valleys, and live oak mottes. This is a true spot-and-stalk hunt: long sessions behind the glass, calling to screaming bucks, and careful stalks across rocky ground to close the distance on a mature buck.
Axis deer are descendants of high-fence escapees from years past, and today they roam this country completely free-range — an off-season treat for hunters who can’t wait until fall. When the rut fires up, mature bucks go hard-horned and bugle at all hours, often in triple-digit heat, and the action can be nonstop. The goal is a heavy, mature buck with 30-inch-plus main beams plus brow and caudal tines — one of the most striking trophies a deer hunter can put on the wall. Looking for another off-season challenge? Our West Texas free-range aoudad hunt runs the same country a few hours west.
The Hunt
This is a classic spot-and-stalk hunt for free-range axis deer. Expect to cover the Hill Country glassing limestone ridges, juniper valleys, and live oak mottes until a mature buck is located, then working in for a shot — often with the help of calling when bucks are screaming during the rut. The hunt runs 3 days total — a half day on arrival, 2 full hunting days, and a half day on departure. Because axis bucks often run in bachelor groups, hunts are typically run 2×1 (two hunters per guide), which means more eyes behind the glass and more chances at mature bucks. Blinds can be arranged on request for hunters who prefer to sit.
When to Hunt
The prime axis rut runs mid-May through August. During that window, most mature bucks are hard-horned and bugling — screaming at all hours of the day, often in 100°F-plus heat. It’s some of the most action-packed deer hunting you’ll ever experience, right in the middle of the off-season when nothing else is open. Axis hunts are also available year-round for hunters looking to fill the calendar outside the rut window. You can also chase axis on our extreme Hawaii axis deer hunt.
Trophy Quality
The goal on this hunt is a fully mature axis buck with 30-inch-plus main beams plus brow and caudal tines. These free-ranging bucks have everything they need in this Hill Country habitat to grow long, sweeping antlers, and your guides are focused on finding the old, heavy bucks that make the trip.

Hunt Style
Fully guided spot-and-stalk — glassing and calling mature bucks across the Hill Country. Hunts typically run 2×1 since bucks often travel in bachelor groups, and blinds can be arranged on request. Shot opportunities typically come at 100-300 yards, with occasional chances a bit farther.
Physical Level
Moderate — the ground is uneven and rocky, and summer rut hunts often mean heat over 100°F. Hunters need to be able to walk this country and should be ready for long, hot days on foot.
Trip Requirements
A valid Texas hunting license is required. This hunt can be done with a rifle or a bow — rifle hunters should bring a .243 caliber or larger, and bowhunters should be confident at their effective range. Bring quality optics, sturdy broken-in leather boots, warm-weather clothing, sunscreen and bug spray. Snake gaiters or snake boots are strongly recommended for this rocky Hill Country terrain. Be prepared and practiced for shots from 100 to 300 yards. While you’re planning a Texas trip, you can also browse our Texas hog hunt at Fort McKavett.
