This is one of the few true free-range oryx hunts you can do in the United States. No high fence, no feeders, no put-and-take — just wild gemsbok living free in the big desert country of far West Texas. Most oryx in America live behind wire; the herds on this hunt roam open, unfenced ranch country the same way they roam the Kalahari, and they survive here for the same reason: this desert is every bit as hot, dry, and unforgiving as the one they came from.
Gemsbok — the South African oryx — were brought to the Chihuahuan Desert region decades ago, and the free-ranging herds that took hold are now one of North America’s most striking trophies: 400-plus-pound desert antelope wearing black war paint and carrying spear-straight horns that can stretch past three feet. If you’re building a Texas trip, we also book a free-range West Texas aoudad hunt in this same rugged country and a free-range axis deer hunt in the Hill Country.
The Hunt
This is a classic spot-and-stalk desert hunt. Expect long sessions behind the glass, picking apart flats, rims, and brushy draws until a mature oryx is located, then using the terrain to close the distance on foot. Oryx are sharp-eyed, tough, and always alert, and in this open country the stalk is the hunt. Because oryx are classified as exotics in Texas, there is no closed season — hunts can be scheduled nearly year-round, and your dates are confirmed when you book.
Trophy Quality
Both bulls and cows carry horns, and a mature free-range oryx is a trophy by any standard — heavy black horns in the mid-30-inch class and beyond, a bold black-and-white face mask, and a body built like a draft horse. These are also one of the best-eating animals in the desert; hunters consistently rank oryx meat among the finest wild game anywhere.

Hunt Style
Fully guided spot-and-stalk. Days are spent covering desert country by truck and on foot, glassing until the right animal is found, then planning a careful stalk through cactus, creosote, and rocky ground. Shot opportunities typically come between 200 and 400 yards in open terrain.
Physical Level
Moderate to strenuous. The country is big, rocky, and hot, and stalks can cover serious ground — but this is not a mountain hunt. Hunters in reasonable walking shape who can handle desert heat will do fine.
Trip Requirements
A valid Texas hunting license is required. Oryx are famously tough animals — bring a flat-shooting rifle in .270 caliber or larger with premium controlled-expansion bullets, quality optics, sturdy boots, and sun protection, and be practiced out to 400 yards.
