Free-range aoudad hunting in the mountains of West Texas is as real as sheep hunting gets without leaving the Lower 48. Based out of the Marathon, Sanderson, and Comstock country, this 4-day fully guided hunt puts you on wild Barbary sheep in some of the most rugged, unforgiving terrain Texas has to offer. There are no fences and no shortcuts — just steep rock, sharp desert brush, and rams that have earned every year of their age.
Aoudad thrive in this desert mountain country, and finding a mature ram means covering it the hard way: hours behind the glass and miles on foot. Your guides know these mountains and know how to pick apart a hillside to find old, heavy-horned rams. It is widely considered the most brutal hunt Texas offers — and one of the most rewarding when you finally get your hands on a 30-inch ram. Comparing options? We also book a 3-day Texas Hill Country aoudad hunt and free-range New Mexico aoudad hunts.
The Hunt
This is a classic spot-and-stalk sheep-style hunt. Expect long days of glassing the West Texas desert, picking apart rimrock and shaded slopes until a shooter ram is located, then planning a stalk through steep, rocky country. Sometimes that means miles of walking to close the distance on a mature ram. The hunt runs 4 days total — a half day on arrival, 3 full hunting days, and a half day on departure.
Trophy Quality
The goal on this hunt is a true trophy-class ram — 30-inch, 9-plus-year-old aoudad that have spent their whole lives in this free-range mountain country. These are old, wary rams with heavy horns and thick chaps, the kind of animal that makes every step of the climb worth it.

Hunt Style
Fully guided spot-and-stalk. Plan on hours of walking and glassing each day, with stalks that can stretch into miles of hiking to reach a mature ram. Shot opportunities typically come at 200-plus yards, with shots out to 600 yards possible when conditions are optimal.
Physical Level
Strenuous — steep, rocky desert mountains, extreme heat, and long days on foot. The terrain is very rocky and covered in thorny desert vegetation — out here, every plant has a sharp point. Hunters should arrive in good physical condition and ready to work for their ram.
Trip Requirements
A valid Texas hunting license is required. Bring a rifle in .270 caliber or larger, quality optics, sturdy broken-in leather boots, a backpack, and clothing appropriate for hot, rugged desert conditions. Be prepared and practiced for shots from 200 out to 600 yards. While you’re planning a Texas trip, you can also browse our Texas hog hunt at Fort McKavett.
