A seven-day rifle whitetail hunt out of a private lodge in Alberta, about an hour and a half west of Edmonton. The average buck here scores 138 to 140, with bucks in the 190 to 200 class taken most years. This is not a cattle-country whitetail hunt — you are hunting in thick bush, aspen groves, and cut blocks where mature bucks feel safe moving during daylight.
You will stay in the outfitter’s home lodge with a full basement set up for hunters — bunks, private bathroom, laundry, and a big common area. The outfitter’s wife handles all the cooking, so you are eating real home-cooked meals every day. Heated blinds, ladder stands, and truck-based hunting options mean you can hunt comfortably even when Alberta’s late-season temps drop below zero.
The Hunt
Your outfitter customizes the hunt to fit each hunter. Most of the hunting is done from heated ground blinds and ladder stands positioned in the bush along travel corridors. If you prefer a more active style — or if the cold gets brutal — you can hunt from the truck along power lines and cut lines, glassing for bucks and setting up with a shooting chair when you spot one. The outfitter knows where the big bucks live and adjusts the plan daily based on what he is seeing.
Groups run up to five hunters at a time, but the hunting areas are spread out enough that you are not on top of each other. This is a rifle hunt, so when a buck steps out at 150 or 200 yards, you are in business.
The Area
West-central Alberta, an hour and twenty minutes west of Edmonton. The landscape is a mix of aspen parkland, thick bush, cut blocks, and power line corridors. Whitetail thrive in this transition zone between farmland and boreal forest. The buck-to-doe ratio is healthy, and the outfitter has been running hunts here for years — the same clients keep coming back, which tells you everything you need to know about the quality of the hunting.
