Africa is a big continent with a big range of game — from 30-pound duikers to 2,000-pound Cape buffalo. There’s no single caliber that does it all, so here’s how to think about rifle selection broken down by the size of animal you’re hunting.
Small Plains Game
Animals: Impala, springbok, blesbok, duiker, warthog
Calibers: .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor
These animals are thin-skinned and lightly built. You don’t need a magnum — you need accuracy and a bullet that won’t destroy too much meat. The 6.5 Creedmoor has become extremely popular for this category because it’s flat-shooting, low-recoil, and deadly accurate. The .270 Winchester has been a plains game staple for decades and remains an excellent choice.
Medium Plains Game
Animals: Kudu, wildebeest, zebra, gemsbok, eland (on the larger end)
Calibers: .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum, 7mm Remington Magnum
This is where you need more energy on target. Kudu and wildebeest are tough animals, and zebra are notoriously hard to put down. The .30-06 is the classic choice — it’s been killing African game for over a century and does the job with authority. The .300 Win Mag gives you extra reach and energy for longer shots across open plains. The 7mm Rem Mag is a flat-shooting option with excellent terminal performance.
Large Plains Game
Animals: Eland (big bulls), large wildebeest, hippo (body shots from distance)
Calibers: .338 Winchester Magnum, .35 Whelen, 9.3x62mm Mauser
When the animals get bigger and tougher, you need calibers that deliver deep penetration with heavy, controlled-expansion bullets. The 9.3×62 is a beloved African caliber — it’s been used on the continent for over a century and meets the minimum legal requirements for dangerous game in most countries. The .338 Win Mag is versatile enough to handle everything from large plains game to backup shots on buffalo.
Dangerous Game
Animals: Cape buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, hippo (close range)
Calibers: .375 H&H Magnum, .416 Rigby, .458 Winchester Magnum
Most African countries require a minimum of .375 caliber for dangerous game, and for good reason. Cape buffalo are the benchmark — they’re massive, incredibly tough, and will try to kill you if the first shot doesn’t anchor them. The .375 H&H is the minimum and also one of the best all-around choices. It’s manageable in terms of recoil while delivering the penetration needed to reach vitals through heavy bone and muscle. The .416 Rigby and .458 Win Mag are for hunters who want maximum stopping power and can handle the recoil.
The One-Rifle Answer
If you could only bring one rifle to Africa for a mixed-bag safari, the .300 Winchester Magnum or .375 H&H Magnum would cover the most ground. The .300 handles everything up to and including eland with proper bullets, while the .375 lets you add dangerous game to the itinerary.
